Substitute Teaching for Cumberland County Schools

Cumberland County Schools is excited to offer a new VIRTUAL training program for substitute teachers that require the Effective Teacher Training Class. The new program is offered by the  App-Garden UniversitySome of the benefits being offered by this program are the ability to train anytime and anywhere you have internet access. As a district, we will be able to keep you updated on board policies and procedures as well as giving you great tips and ideas for being a successful substitute teacher. This class is still offered at Fayetteville Technical Community College for those that prefer a classroom setting.


All required documents must be included with application for acceptance. Qualifications: You must be a high school graduate or pass the state equivalency test (GED) from a regionally accredited school or college and meet one (1) of the following:

  1. At least 30 semester hours of credit from a regionally accredited 4-year college or university, or 45 quarter hours from a regionally accredited community college, technical institute or other colleges on the quarter system. Credit hours must be in a degree program.  (Attachment of official transcript required.)
  2. A minimum combined score of 750 (old) and 1150 (new) on the SAT, or a score of 16 or better on the ACT.  (Attachment of score report required.)
  3. A minimum score of 85% on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This site, Free TABE study guide in video tutorial format and a TABE practice test, has a completely free TABE study guide in video tutorial format and a TABE practice test.
    (Attachment of score report required.) The TABE test is administered monthly.  Please call 910.678.7395 to reserve a test space. There is no charge for this test.

Please complete the NC State (Department of Public Instruction) online application, NC TeacherMatch.  Be sure to select Cumberland County when submitting your application online.

The following documents are needed for new applicants:

  • Completed online application (NC Teacher Match)
  • Social Security Card
  • Current Picture ID
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED
  • Qualifying Elements (SAT or ACT Scores, College Credits, or TABE)
  • Copy of the Effective Teacher Training Certificate or Teaching License /Classes for the Effective Teacher Training. ETT classes are held at Fayetteville Technical Community College, please call 910.678.8446 for more information, OR the training and orientation are now offered online by  App-Garden University.
  • Background Form
  • Health Examination

After all documents have been submitted and the background search completed, an email will be sent with further instructions.

The following documents are needed for current CCS employees or employees that have worked within the last year.

  • Completed online application (NC Teacher Match)
  • Social Security Card
  • Current Picture ID
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED
  • Qualifying Elements (SAT or ACT Scores, College Credits, or TABE)
  • Copy of the Effective Teacher Training Certificate or Teaching License /Classes for the Effective Teacher Training. To maintain an active status, a substitute teacher must complete a minimum of fifteen assignments per school year.

Failure to provide all required documentation will prevent your application from being processed.
